Meditation: July 26

“For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.” 1 Corinthians 2:2

Once Jesus Christ is revealed to you, it is then necessary to measure all information by and through the knowledge of Jesus Christ and Him crucified. Former experiences and former schools of thought may try to compete with this new gained knowledge. The logical mind searches through former experiences seeking out ways to deny Christ or to diminish the impact of experiencing Him. Then Christ becomes subjective while other things become the object of our faith. The intent is to get us to serve God for what we may gain personally rather than living for Him. To know Him as crucified is to live for Him alone. He gives us His resurrected live and we live in newness of life. No longer are we competing for the same prizes that the world is seeking after. Our goal is to know Him even as we are known. It takes determination for the message of Christ to remain relevant in an age of selfishness and self-centeredness. But when we are determined to know Him, He gives us the knowledge necessary to live the abundant life. It is a fulfilling life with purpose.

Meditation: May 28

‘‘Every valley shall be exalted and every mountain and hill brought low.” Isaiah 40:4

God reaches down to valleys in order to lift them up and pulls down ever-exalted mountain. He encounters the mighty when they trust in their own strength. Nothing is able to stand above Him. These mountains stand to challenge His authority. His is the power to uphold mountains, and He has the right to remove them. By His Word mountains quake and the earth trembles. He is awesome in power and majesty. Yet He dwells in the high and holy place with the humble and the contrite. He exalts the valleys. The same power that brings mountains down is the power that lifts valleys up. The purity of their hearts permits them to see God. Their perspective is not the same as those who have lofty goals and are selfish in nature. They possess His heart. Their wills are in synch with His will. The way up is down and the way down is up. So different from the nature of fallen man, but the way of life that leads us down the path of life.

March 2016 Article: “Friendship Really Matter”

Life’s most precious treasure is contained within individuals who await the exploration of one who is interested enough to find it. A casual conversation that leads to the revelation of the deep secrets of the heart that reaches the soul with mutual understanding is a breath of fresh air. Lasting relationships that can endure the test of time are birthed and established. One writer said, “A person’s wealth is not measured by the size of his bank account but by the friends he keeps.” This is not our genesis—children are born selfish but quickly learn the lesson that provisions come from sources beyond their own ability and reach. Even though all are directed towards themselves, they eventually respond with a smile or some indication to acknowledge the lives around them. But somewhere down the road, many grow to compete with others for what they want and separate themselves from the very hand that fed them. We need other people, whether we know it or not.

Within an impersonal crowd, the masses move in every direction. Although each individual has a motive and is in pursuit of a specific goal, there are those special ones that provide a kind of sanctuary. No longer a generalized blur of people whisking in a rush towards their assignments, but rather, they show interest in the things that interest you. The values that you hold dear are retained within their hearts. Before a man ever finds a wife, he must first find a friend. When he marries his friend, there is a foundation established for having all things in common. Our churches must be full of friends who worship God and enjoy His Presence together. We must work at converting strangers into becoming friends if we are to ever see them converted to Christ. Friends love unconditionally and expect nothing in return. Friends will correct in love because the correction can be well received if love is firmly established. Friends are more than willing to inconvenience themselves if it is for the others benefit. Even when a friend fails to do what is right, there is still someone that will do what is right on your behalf.

We all need friends more than we could ever know. There is a need to retain old friends and to always be about making new friends. Old friends are like expensive wine, refined over time. New friends are the new adventure awaiting exploration. As the years pass, how many friends have you gathered along the way? Review your list of acquaintances and ask the question, why have these people have crossed your path? Is it your responsibility to cultivate the relationship or was the purpose fulfilled in the exchange? If you are to search for a deeper meaning, prayerfully pursue that purpose. They may be able to see the message of Christ in you before they hear it from you. This could be the necessary bond for mutual enrichment. I have attended many funerals and in hearing the remarks and eulogy of the person that I thought I knew, I have often wondered why I never saw that side of the person being eulogized. At that moment I would wish to turn back the hands of time and relive with them what others had so warmly appreciated. There are things in all of us awaiting the right time and effort to bring it to the surface. God gives us what someone else needs and gives them what we need. Even when we are given an assignment, the first question ought to be who are the people given to me for its completion? His assignments are always greater than our abilities alone to complete. Instead of remaining alone, make friends; be a friend and start living!

Meditation: February 29

“We humans keep brainstorming options and plans, but God’s purpose prevails.” Prov. 19:21 (MSN)

We are surrounded with choices. Each day we must decide which path to follow and distinguish between two or more options. Sometimes silently and personally, while other times a public collaboration among thinkers who possess the wisdom to assist us in reaching our goals. Both options and plans are necessary for progress. But the question is, what is the origin of our plans and between what consequences are we making our choices? Each path has a destination. They will lead us to a definite end. Yet there is a transcendent purpose that’s elevated above the ideas of the collective minds of all humans. It is not subjected to the limits of chance and the possible risk of failure. His purpose will prevail even though they face the futility of mortal challenges. Either we align with His purpose or ultimately fail at our own.

Meditation: September 27

“I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Phil 3:14

The Apostle Paul uses the language of an athlete competing for the ultimate prize. The intermediate victories are not be become the level in which he was to settle, but his eyes were upon something much greater. They may be used as a means to lead him there, but ultimate prize was the fulfillment of the upward call. This has more to do with becoming someone than getting something. He qualified to enter in to the competition of becoming all that God had called him to become. And out of his becoming, he was enabled by the Holy Spirit to do all that God had called him to do. We too have been called by Almighty God to a standard of spiritual excellence. It is a standard of living out and giving a full and clear expression of the life of Jesus Christ upon the earth. The world is in desperate need of knowing Christ and He can only be known through His Church. He was aware of his imperfections and areas where improvements were needed. But also open for God to reveal to him any blind spots that he at that point was not able to see. His was a matter of progressing in Christ towards the ultimate goal that was before him. To be found in Him, not having his own righteousness or self-justification of deeds, but totally yielded to Christ. We must set this as our goal as well. He has called us to reach up in order that we may reach out and touch the world with His love and power. This can only happen when it is all of Him and none of us.

Meditation: September 5

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you.” Jeremiah 1:5

It was all about God before consideration is given to self. God had a purpose in mind, unknown to us but awaiting us by our Creator. “I knew where you were to fit into My plans.” Self-discovery is the challenge given to each person to consider what God already knows about us. “If any lack wisdom, even that which pertains to self, let him ask God.” Our reasoning can merely draw from what is already known. To observe God’s creation and to see merely through the eyes of others; their experiences and life alone may limit us from knowing what God desire to show us. God is aware of your uniqueness because He made you the way you are. Not to be weird and merely associate with those who different for the sake of standing out in the crowd, but participate in a plan far greater than even our most sophisticated plans could take us. God has a plan for your life .It is His desire to use everything that He has given to you for His glory. His plan is also to remove from you everything planted in you by the enemy of your soul to disqualify you from achieving your predetermined goal. Let Him fill the void and emptiness in your life and complete the task that He has begun.

October 2014 Article: “Letter to African American Churches”

The dream of those that embraced a biblical worldview was for reconciliation. In spite of many imperfections, the goal remained the same—bridging the divide between cultures, races, and denominations by negotiating a position of agreement without compromise that was acceptable by all parties involved. We are divided because all parties are right on one hand and wrong on the other. No culture has a premium on the truth, but competition and prejudices may blind a people so that they are incapable of seeing their own faults. Only when an established standard is fully embraced can there be a reference point in order to measure the distance between what is and what ought to be. We have missed it because our standard has been compromised. Weeds have been sown and are now growing among the wheat. When alternative positions are widely accepted, alternative lifestyles and practices result in the end. We are going through a process intended to remind us of our desperate need for Divine assistance.  It is the threshing and refining of wheat that can produce bread for future generations.

Many things have been done to us, but we must reckon with the things done by us. Just as Israel was summoned to return to God, He is showing us our need to return. When estrangement occurs, the new paradigm becomes the new standard. Entertainment becomes the measure rather than a piercing message that produces conviction deep within the heart. Feeling good has become the anesthetic that makes spiritual death less painful. Similar to the question and answer dialogue between God and Israel in the Book of Malachi where God says, “I have loved you”, with the response being, “what way have You loved us? You have offered defiled food on My altar,” and the response being, “what way have we defiled You?”  The Truth is offensive to those who seek self-justification, but when awareness happens, changes for the better can be made. As ministers of the Gospel, our objective is to locate God on behalf of the people in the midst of all the chaos and confusion around us. He works within that environment in order to lead us to His ultimate purpose. Lo Debar is not the Promise Land. He is not merely about our reaching a resting point, but about arriving at our intended destination.

The Lord was in the Civil Rights Movement of the past, but He was not the movement exclusively. He was in the ending of the corrupt apartheid government South Africa, but He cannot be identified as that alone. He deals with governments and governmental leaders, but His rule transcends their rule. Politicizing issues may produce temporary results, but they will crumble under pressure. We can learn from those with whom we may disagree at this point, but we can only learn what we must know if we are open to see where God is. If we hear His voice, and conform to the image of His Son, Jesus Christ, we will be in position to carry out His will. Only then will He work among us in ways to prosper us as a people. The occurrences of our day must become a wake-up call to repent of the apparent good that we would try to do. We need a message that was once delivered to the saints. Nothing can stop us from reaching our goal because our goal is no longer exclusive to us, but His will for us.
