From the Fall of Adam to the birth of Jesus, the gap between God and humanity continued to widen. It did not make logical sense that eating fruit could become so fatal that every individual on the planet would eventually die. “Death reigned by one man” (Romans 5:17). However, death was able to reign through the separation of the spirit of Adam from the Spirit of God. God breathed His Spirit into the nostrils of Man for him to become a living soul. Sin produced instantaneous death, since from the very second of yielding to the serpent’s temptation, Adam no longer knew where he was nor who he was. He lost his identity at the very moment that he was separated from the intimate communion he once had with God.
The serpent’s fragment of truth, using the deception of self-reliance, was the trap, particularly among those who are wise in their own eyes. No number of convincing arguments would be sufficient to convince the strong-willed whose eyes had been opened to know both good and evil. When a person is convinced that he knows himself better than anyone else, he then engages all of his faculties to prove his point. Job was asked the question, “Can a man through searching (or research) find out God? (Job 11:7) Is it possible that his knowledge of good and evil could elevate him to a level where he can discover the secrets contained within the mystery of life? What he discovers is that the more he knows, the emptier he becomes. His emptiness is the result of his detachment from the Source of life. Everything that he thinks he knows is mere theory. When the Truth is presented to him, it debunks everything that he thought he ever knew.
God did not send us a theoretical view of life, nor did He present to us a formula for success. He became Man by experiencing and demonstrating what his life was intended to become. He was not a mere illustration but a demonstration of complete obedience to the will of God. As the Eternal Son of God, His will to obey through manifesting the Father’s will as the Word of God created all created things. This was illustrated through the scripture, “The Word became flesh.” The Word of God became what it had never been before so that we might become what we had never been before. The same One who breathed breath into the lungs of Adam breathed on His disciples and said to them, “Be filled with the Holy Spirit.” The breath of life and the breath of the Holy Spirit are from the same Source, and without the initial breath of God, man could not have become a living soul. Without the breath of the Holy Spirit, he would not be able to engage effectively in the work God intended.
He paid the price for the sins of the world. As the last Adam, He passed the test of temptation where the first Adam failed. As the serpent tempted Eve in the Garden, Jesus was tempted in the wilderness. He showed us how to live, where life consists of obedience to every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Jesus did this not just for examination or discussion, but to show that the Holy Spirit produces life within the soul as we receive the life contained within the Word. As Jesus became the Incarnate Word, He did not return as He was before. When the Word is engrafted in our hearts, we live, move, and have our being in Him alone.
